In English, we use the simple past to talk about things happened. 
To say or write experiences is more interested if you say when happened.

"THE TIME ADVERBIALS"
There are a number of words or phrases that are often used to show when an action or situation happened in the past.
Here are some of the most common ones:

The important words for today are yesterday, last and ago.
